The impressive opening of AEL FC Arena is a very important fact of Greek Athletics. Many people from Larissa were present at the opening of the Stadium as well as the Regional Chief of Thessaly Mr. Kostas Agorastos, Larissa's and Tyrnavo's Bishop Mr. Ignatios, the chairman of Greek Football Federation Mr. Sofoklis Pilavios and the Executive Manager of Super Legue Mr. Patrick Komninos.

The new athletic center was developed in a total of 144,000 square meters in the region of Neapolis in Larissa. The modern athletic center is constructed within UEFA three stars international specifications. The construction of the stadium started on September 2009 and was completed in late 2010. The Capacity is 16,118 all covered, with the possibility to expand to 18,000 for the 2013 Mediterranean Games.
The stadium includes 38 suites (with room for 12 persons in each one), parking lot for 1,104 vehicles, commercial space, cinema, a 1500-seat open theater, athletic rooms with a capacity of 100 beds, central plaza for the organisation of events, and 12 tennis courts.
